Elevator Seattle, WA
New Atrium Glass Elevator, Economy Market Building, Seattle, WA
ECH Architecture provided a preliminary design study under the contractual agreement with Wieland Lindgren Engineers as the prime consultant. The design included a new elevator with hoistway and machine room in the open three-story atrium of the Economy Market Building of the Pike Place Market complex.
ADA access for all individuals to all levels of the building has been identified as a critical need. At the request of the Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority (PDA), the design team investigated the feasibility of installing an elevator in the historic building. To minimize the impact and best blend with the existing open structure of the atrium, we proposed the elevator be an "observation-type" with glass on all but the door side. The transparent appearance of an observation elevator helps maintain the open feeling inside the atrium and provides a more enjoyable experience for the passenger.
The elevator chosen is a roped hydraulic cantilever-type lifting mechanism. With this approach, the lifting mechanism is above ground and there is no massive drilling effort as required with traditional hole-in-the ground hydraulic elevators. The proposed capacity of the elevator is 2,500 lbs. with a platform size that meets ADA requirements. The hoistway is constructed of open steel mesh that allows for good visibility, architectural interest and it is open at the top, which eliminates the need for mechanical ventilation.
